Dr Animante is a Ghanaian born British economist, investment banker, chartered accountant and business management consultant. He has over 20 years of rich experience in corporate finance, treasury risk management, derivatives hedging and securitisation. David began his career in accountancy with KPMG in 1998 where he supervised audit assignments for a number of clients in various sectors including mining and exploration, construction, insurance, asset management as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations.
At the time of leaving KPMG in late 2001 he was responsible for managing all the firm’s insurance and re-insurance clients as well as training junior staff on insurance related assurance and consulting services.
After KPMG, David joined the Ghana subsidiary of Blue Skies UK Holdings as chief finance officer, where he had oversight responsibility for all the accounting, taxation and financial management affairs of the company. He frequently assumed an acting role as general manager and was a trusted adviser to the CEO and chairman. David was instrumental in driving Blue Skies expansion into four countries through his contribution to global business strategy and sourcing of funding for the group’s international operations.
He left Blue Skies in early 2006 to join Pro Security Ghana Limited as director of finance, until October 2006 when he left for the United Kingdom in pursuit of academic and professional interests.
In October 2007, he joined KPMG Manchester office as a consultant in financial services. In this role he was lead advisor for a number of high value clients including JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Capita, Rathbones Investments, Cooperative Bank, Electricity North West, Bradford & Bingley and W H Ireland among others.
Since 2010, David has worked as a consultant in a number of broad areas which encompass derivatives hedging, hedge accounting, financial structuring and securitisation, quantitative risk management and most recently prudential policy and regulatory risk management.
This work has been for a number of banking, investment banking as well as asset management clients. Some of these clients include Barclays Investment Bank, Halifax Bank of Scotland, Lloyds Banking Group, Standard Chartered Bank, Close Brothers, UBS Investment Bank and HSBC.
David is also executive director at Imperial Arbitrage Capital Limited, a hedge fund currently investing their own funds.
David has worked on innovative research programmes at some of the world's leading universities. He has a PhD in finance and economics from the Imperial College London and also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma there. His doctoral research culminated in the publication of a substantial body of work in a dissertation entitled 'Macroeconomic Volatility and Sovereign Asset-Liability Management'.
Whilst at Imperial College Business School, he lectured in Investments and Portfolio Management. David taught postgraduate students on the following course groups: MSc Finance, MSc Risk Management and Financial Engineering as well as MSc Metals and Energy Finance.
After completing his PhD, David has been a visiting professor or invited lecturer/speaker on a wide range of finance and economics subjects to students in a number of UK universities including Imperial College London. He is involved in active research and has published a number of refereed and non-refereed academic papers including conference presentations.
His academic research is at the intersection of macroeconomics and finance and involves the application of quantitative financial economics tools to solve macroeconomic problems. One strand of his most recent research has focused on macroeconomic volatility management in emerging countries. His research seeks to advocate for an integrated portfolio approach to fiscal and monetary policy interventions in emerging countries as an alternative to existing theory and practice.
His work on ‘Dynamic Portfolio Management Approach to Optimal Fiscal Policy in Resource-Rich Countries’ has been featured by the Public Debt Management (PDM) Network - an initiative of the Italian Treasury and the World Bank, aimed at building, sharing and developing knowledge on public debt management.
Another strand of his research focuses on optimal resource allocation in dynamic general equilibrium models, asset-liability risk management and derivative hedging strategies. Prior to his doctoral studies at Imperial, David obtained an MBA from the Oxford Brookes University, Oxford and an MSc in Finance from the Lancaster University.
